Edinburgh is charming. The capital of Scotland is a historic, atmospheric city with centuries-old buildings, winding cobbled streets, and an imposing castle that towers over the Old Town.
While there’s tons to see and do here (including plenty of spooky ghost tours), the city is actually pretty compact. Everything you want to see is usually within walking distance. Because of this, all of the hotels below are centrally located, so you never have to go far to see the sights.
1. Stay Central Hotel
Just three minutes from the popular Royal Mile, this three-star hotel is housed in a historic 17th-century building that’s been fully modernized. The interior is covered in funky, artsy decor that includes plenty of distinctive artwork and colorful accents. I like that the rooms are bright, clean, and spacious. The beds are super comfortable and the rooms have a flat-screen TV, a desk, a tea/coffee maker and a rain shower (the showers have great water pressure too). There’s also a hearty free breakfast with lots of options, including meat, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetarian fare.
2. Cheval Old Town Chambers
This stylish 5-star hotel offers modern luxury apartments, making it the perfect choice for groups or travelers who just need more space. It’s located in the Old Town, right near the Royal Mile, so it’s close to everything. The deluxe rooms feature Scandinavian-chic decor with a minimalist feel, lots of space and natural light. There’s a full kitchen in each apartment, as well as a washer and dryer. The rooms also have a TV, WiFi, a coffee/tea maker, a desk and super comfortable beds. The breakfast, which can be included in the price, offers lots of variety, including many local specialties.
3. Yotel
This four-star hotel is clean and modern, with spacious rooms and super comfortable beds. Located in New Town, it’s just a 15-minute walk from the Royal Mile. There’s a gym and bar on-site, and a full English breakfast is served every morning (which can be included in the price). The rooms here are on the small side, but I didn’t want the extra space. The beds are soft, and the rooms also have flat-screen TVs and free WiFi. Just note that while the bathrooms are bright and well-maintained, they don’t offer much privacy. They’re essentially part of the room, and not really separate from the sleeping area.
4. Gleneagles Townhouse
An ornate and lavish five-star hotel, this luxury five-star hotel offers beautiful rooms with antique furniture and historic design. It’s a stately hotel that will make you feel like an aristocrat at the turn of the 20th century. The restaurant and dining area, where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast every morning, feature massive, opulent columns and super-high ceilings. There’s also a bar and gym on-site, as well as a spa and wellness centre with a relaxing sauna. The rooms are equally elegant, with wonderfully soft beds that are comfortable and spacious. Rooms also feature a flat-screen TV, coffee/tea maker and free WiFi. While the bathrooms aren’t large, they’re beautifully designed and well-lit. The hotel is just a short eight-minute walk from the Royal Mile.
5. The Salisbury Hotel
This boutique townhouse hotel in a quiet residential area is just a five-minute drive from the Royal Mile. It’s located in the suburb of Newington, so it’s a great choice for travellers wanting a quieter stay away from the main tourist area. It’s a stylish four-star hotel and all rooms feature original Georgian features (some even have four-poster beds). The decor is a little dated, but the rooms are spacious and airy. The bathrooms are also large and well-maintained. A simple buffet breakfast is provided each morning and the friendly staff really go out of their way to make you feel welcome. If you arrive by car, there are even parking spaces available.
6. Prestonfield House
This super luxurious 5-star hotel is incredibly lavish. I really loved the ornate decor. It’s absolutely unique, both majestic and colorful with an aristocratic feel. All rooms are decorated with antique furniture that makes you feel like you’re staying in a Renaissance palace. Rooms also feature flat-screen TVs, minibars, free WiFi, and coffee/tea makers. Fluffy bathrobes are also included.
The on-site restaurant offers a posh afternoon tea, and a delicious breakfast buffet is included every morning. Located just south of the famous Arthur’s Seat, the hotel also offers free parking. Personally, I think it’s the perfect choice for a luxurious retreat or romantic getaway.
Full of cozy pubs, top-notch whiskey, and home to a sprawling UNESCO Old Town, Edinburgh is a city perfect for weekend getaways and week-long stays. It’s a city of historic charm and character, and one of my favorite places in Europe. And if you choose one of the hotels listed above, you are guaranteed a great stay!
